It is one of the easiest and important concepts of Verbal Reasoning. In this type of question, students are asked to find the place of an alphabet or a word based on the different types of arrangement

Alphabetical  Order

Arranging words in alphabetical order implies 'to arrange them in the order as they appear in a dictionary', i.e., as per the order in which the beginning letters of these words appear in the English alphabet.

Now the Question arises as how to arrange the Words In Alphabetical Order, and the answer to this question is to  First consider the first letter of each word. Arrange the words in the order in which these letters appear in the English alphabet.

Illustration: Consider the words - Approval, Problem, Management, School, Flower.

These words begin with letters A, P, M, P, S, F respectively.

According to English alphabet their order is  A, F, M, P, S.

Thus, the correct alphabetical order of these words is :Approval, Flower, Management, Problem, School.

But there are certain situations in which we have more that two words starting from the same letter, In such cases we will arrange the two words according to the second letter in the word or we can say that such words should be arranged in the order of second letter in the alphabet.

ILLUSTRATION:  Consider the words - Client, Castle, Face, Viper, Dazzle.

Solution: In this question the words can be arranged according to their first letter as :

Client - Castle, Dazzle, Face, Viper.

Now we see that we have two words starting with C , in this case we will consider their second letters, i.e., l and a. Arranging these words accordingly, 'Castle' comes before 'Client'. Hence the arrangement will be

Castle, Client, Dazzle, Face, Viper.

If both the first and second letters of two or more words are the same, arrange those words, will be arranged by considering their third letters and so on.

Illustration:  Which of them will come in the middle if all of them are arranged alphabetically. Gradine, Gradient, Graduate, Grading,Gradual

A. Gradine   B. Gradient   C. Graduate  D.Grading   E. Gradual

Answer: D

Solution: On arranging the words in alphabetical order we get

So the word in the middle will be Grading
